LAYERS

Notes with ideas to be progressed further:

  • Experiments pasting photographic images to canvas (previously painted on the reverse) and layering/ altering, adding another layer to the surface. Covering with a thin layer of paint; washing over the surface; printing images onto tracing paper and washing water over the surface to leave some of the image on the canvas below; covering a photographic image with plastic and painting on the plastic; attaching paper printed images to card and washing over with water – deterioration of the physical image and the colour.
  • I have become increasingly interested in layers as a theme within my practice and have been experimenting both the physical layering within images and of images themselves
  • Closely related to this I have also been experimenting with using coloured objects as filters to add a layer of colour onto images in an unusual way.
  • Time passing, temporal nature of the image.
  • Transparency and opacity – linked to light, reflections, blur, looking beyond the matter?
  • Using transparent coloured objects etc as filters to add layers to images.
  • Unintentional printing effects adding unexpected dimension to the image.
  • Printing and painting onto differnent materials and layering up combinations.
  • Adding more and more layers of distortion and interest – further changing, controlling, obscuring and manipulating the image.
  • Further manipulation and distortion of images through treatments and presentational effects
  • Another related strategy I have been employing is making images with interesting perspective and field of vision.
  • A particular feature has been taking shots through something close up to frame something in the distance or distort parts of the image.
  • Interest in manipulation, layers and distortion.
  • Surfaces
  • Complexity – finding complexity within apparent simplicity, or is it in fact just as intriguing the other way round, interests me in my practice and remains a source of tension in making and viewing contexts.
